Not for Us

Pop and I had a busy day today.  He was off work, so of course we worked at home!  He has had plans for some time to clean up the "mountain" by our pond.  I helped him for part of the day planting grass and clearing brush. What Pop sees as he does the work is our children and our grandchildren enjoying the pond, the dam, and the hill.  He sees sledding in the winter and picnics in the spring, summer, and fall.  He envisions a bench atop the hill for us to enjoy watching the kids as they play.  The work he does is not for him.

Later in the day, I left Pop still working on the hill and headed back to the house to do one of the things on my list.  I needed to seal the porch decking today so it will be ready for winter.  In the quiet of the afternoon I thought about the work we do at Four Sisters Farm.  As I applied the sealer, stroke by stroke with a wide paintbrush, a thought came to me softly from somewhere deep within..."The work you are doing isn't for you."

I paused and pondered that thought and realized how true it is.  Oh, it is "our" place; "our" house; "our land."  In reality, it belongs to God like all things and we are the grateful stewards of what He chooses to give us.

The work isn't about us at all...this place is a tool to be used as God sees fit.  We bought the place knowing that God had plans for it that we knew nothing about.  It brings us joy to share it with our family and our friends; and to wait and see what God will do with it...and us.

As I continued painting, I came across the dents in the porch decking made by our young superheroes with small hammers.  I had no idea how strong they were (and are)!  Then I came across evidence of spilled wine that Daina and I enjoyed as we played with tiny kittens one evening.  There are red marks from the rocking chairs I painted for EJ and Farm Chick when they lived here that defy being covered by the "honey oak sealer" and skid marks from a small bicycle that was ridden on the porch when it rained one day.  As I came across each of those "scars" on the porch, the memories associated with them warmed my heart.  We could sand out those stains and dents...but why?

Those imperfections in the porch are hallmarks of our lives here.  They reflect the growth of our grandchildren.  They bring to mind times we have sat on the porch...We once sat there with friends on a summer evening, sharing funny stories until it was later than any of us intended to stay up.  Another time, Jewel and I sat in rocking chairs praying for her mom when she was taken to the hospital (glad to say she is fine and still baking pies).  Of course, our Fourth of July fireworks are viewed from the porch as well as our annual costume parade of the grandchildren at our family fall party.

I realize that the work Pop and I are doing out here at Four Sisters Farm, means so much more than just physical labor.

As we work, the images that come to our minds have far greater implications than completing the task at hand... We see our young grand children at play...our children visiting and drinking coffee on the porch...evenings spent with friends...sunrises and sunsets...changing seasons...new phases of our lives coming.

Ecclesiastes 3:9-13, "What do workers gain from their toil?  I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.  He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.  I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.  That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil -- this is the gift of God."

Grammy's Workout

Since I've been living on the farm, I haven't worked out...okay...actually, I have an aversion to working out at all...much unlike nearly all of the Four Sisters Farm family...like Pop who believes in a consistent workout involving strength training and aerobics like running, EJ who loves to run - a long way - like miles, DW who is training to run farther than she's ever run before, and Farm Chick, Pretty Princess, and Rock Star who faithfully go to the gym to hit the treadmill or eliptical. (shudder)

Today, it occurred to me that although I don't run or go to the gym, I am far from sedentary. I enjoy being outside and working on things. So if I'm outside and working, doesn't that mean I'm working out? It's just semantics really, right?

Anyway...I decided to run you through my workout today. You might want to try it and see if you can keep up. Keep in mind that this was just the morning routine (try not to feel sorry for me).
  • I began with Flexibility Training - I climbed up and down the porch railing to install steel "eyes" on the roof line trim boards for hanging plants, Christmas lights, etc. repeating this up and down process until the entire porch has enough eyes (it's a big porch, okay?).
  • Next I moved on to Strength Training - I loaded firewood into big wagon and drug the wagon to the back door; then carried the wood down the stairs to the fireplace...repeating until the wagon was empty. Next, I grabbed a sledge hammer and pounded the pieces of old damaged firebricks into small pieces in the driveway. (I noticed the dogs backed way off when I started this routine!)
  • Then it was time for Aerobics - I watered all the animals by making trips between the well house and the hydrant. Dogs - check! - 1 and 2 and cats - check! - 3 and 4 and chickens - check! 5 and 6 and ...well you get the idea. I'm just glad we don't have a horse, cow, pig, goat or other livestock yet...I'll have to work up to that but it's good to have goals.
  • Next, I moved on to Step Aerobics - I began in the basement and carried up a load of laundry, washed it, moved it to the dryer, carried up the next load, etc. and when it was all clean, I carried it all back down the steps and put them away. Granted, it's a slow moving kind of step aerobics but it does involve steps.
  • After all that, I went for Advanced Aerobics - I chased the one crazy chicken who "flew the coop" while the water in the chicken watering thing was being replenished. (Note: all the other chickens were being good and patient through this process.)

I think if I keep it up I'll be really fit. Now if I can just "exercise" self-control and limit my portions of Farm Chick's awesome cooking!!

A tale of bravery and lots of dirty, wet laundry

Once upon a time there was a pitiful looking garage roof.
It had rotting wood and tar covered shingles.  It was a sad sight to behold.
One day (which turned into a weekend) a team of brave heroes came to the rescue!  Pop lead the charge with Doc, EJ, PhoJo and Romeo (The four sisters' men if you are new here).
DW even got in on a little roofing action.  This team was strong and determined.
They worked many hours in dangerous conditions.
They laughed in the face of the wind and rain that tried to back them down.
When the last shingle was nailed to the roof they raised their nail guns and cried out...VICTORY!!!

A is for Apricots

I know you are expecting a blog about a certain wedding...but...Pretty Princess and Romeo have been busy getting married, going on their honeymoon, and moving into an apartment. They will do a post soon, but in the meantime...

We have a lot of apricots! There are three apricot trees at Four Sisters Farm and they are ripening! I'm in apricot heaven! Pop and I picked a bunch and then started to work...sorting, washing, pitting, soaking, dehydrating, freezing, and enjoying some fresh...as in a fresh apricot cobbler! YUMMY!

In honor of the season premiere of "The Office" - Grammy's Office

I've been given an incredible opportunity...to continue working for the folks in Charleston, SC...remotely...what a great idea! My alarm goes off (yes it's early and we don't have a rooster in the hen house at this point), I commute from the bedroom to the living room (routing through the bathroom and the kitchen) and I'm at work. It's a beautiful thing. My overall office is extensive and I'll show you more of it later but for now I'll show you my work space, here it is...all 20 cubit feet of it.

The scenery is nice and getting better all the time as Pop and I continue to finish out our space. I'll put pics on showing the finished space soon...okay, as soon as I can since I don't know quite when it will be completed.

Like any new work environment, adjustments have to be made...you know, for lighting, ergonomics, sounds, etc. Well...I was on the phone a while back - utilizing the speaker phone for hands-free working - when my BIT (Brilliant Information Technology) guy asked what the noise was. I realized he was hearing the washing machine waste water making its way down the outgoing sewage pipes that are currently open near my office space. Since these pipes handle all outgoing water for one entire end of the house, it isn't just the water from the washing machine I hear...

which makes me think of another office I've seen...enjoy the following video clip (thanks for supplying it, Romeo)and stop by my office sometime - I'll make you a cup of coffee or tea.
