When I went to gather egg today guess what I found! Pretty little eggs right where they are supposed to be...well some of them. It seems more of the girls figured it out but some of them still laid in the corner on the ground. Duh! I guess I need to get more fake eggs to put in each box.
Today was a record breaking day. 13 eggs! Way to go ladies! :)

Fake Eggs
So, one of our fellow bloggers (and chicken owners) suggested we use fake eggs to teach the chickens were to lay. I promptly went to Hobby Lobby and purchased 6 eggs. Then I placed them in different nesting boxes. So far, the only one who has been fooled by them is EJ. He saw the lovely little eggs in a row and got really excited...until he picked one up. Can't wait to see if this works! :)

Tending to the Chickens
Last week, I loaded the our children up in the ol' SUV and headed to the farm for an afternoon visit. I hadn't been there since the chickens started laying eggs!
My memories of chickens revolve around a scary rooster experience as a kid, so I was sort of surprised that the chickens think that they are pets! They even let us pet them. Farm Chick says they are like cats...they arch their backs and stick up their tail feathers when you pet them!
I apologize for the dust flecks on my camera lens but I had to include this photo of the littlest cowboy. I think I will dub him "the chicken whisperer!" So cute!
The chickens don't quite "get it" yet when it comes to laying eggs in the nesting boxes. So you have to be careful not to step on eggs that they have randomly laid around the chicken coop!
It was a record setting egg day...there were 8 to collect in the afternoon and Farm Chick found 2 more after we left!
I was cracking up at the oldest Cowboy's "copy chicken!"
EJ had given the kids a chore to do. Their job was to get hay, bring it to the chicken coop and put it in the nesting boxes for the chickens. Hopefully more hay will encourage the chickens to nest down in it and lay eggs there instead of the floor!
Lou is pretty handy with a pitch fork as long as everyone stays out of accidental "poking range!"
After the wagon was loaded up, they headed back to the chicken coop!
They filled those nesting boxes with every last bit of hay from the wagon!
The kids love spending time at the farm and I love to see them excited to help out and do things that are productive and helpful! "Good stuff" as Grammy says!

EGGS EGGS and MORE EGGS!!!! YAY!!!
Ok so the ladies are starting to produce some eggs. I, being a nerd and numbers person, created a spreadsheet to keep track of how many eggs were produced, we ate, we gave to the docs, and we sold; on a weekly basis. This week our lovely ladies layed 32 eggs!!!! How great is that! Oh and by the way, we ate some of them and they ARE GREAT! Still a bit smaller than the store bought "large" ones, however we have a few that are bigger than them. It's interested to see the numbers growing. I would liken it to trying to get my diesel tractor started after it's run out of gas. It's getting larger numbers, then smaller numbers, then growing again. Like today we had 6 eggs just today. Here's a picture of some of the ones we got last week.
