Our multi-generational adventure at Four Sisters Farm has come to a close.
We moved to town and now we are starting a new adventure.
Don't worry.
We still make frequent visits to Four Sisters Farm!
Pop and Grammy are busy renovating the top floor of the farm. They are "living the dream" as they say.
Like a baby bird I am leaving the nest.
Or the blog in this case.
I have finally done it.
Come on over and sign up to follow me at The Growing Table.
We are growing our family and growing them up.

In honor of big transitions in life
Moving away from Four Sisters Farm felt a lot like when I left for college. I was so excited but also sad to be away from my family.
Rock Star wrote me a poem before I left that fall. I laughed my head off when I found it while unpacking last week.
It was written in 1998. She was 15 and I was 18.

If You Stay Here With Me...
I'll let you listen to your Judds tape and even let you sing along,
and once in a blue moon I'll admit when I've been wrong.
I promise I'll try my hardest just to make you smile,
and maybe make you laugh but only every once in a while.
I'll tell you you're a goddess and remind you how beautiful you are,
and I promise not to ask anymore if I can drive your car.
I'll wake you up every morning with breakfast in bed,
and if you want I'll paint your toenails with the very brightest of red.
I'll run you some warm bath water just so that you can relax,
and while you're working hard at that I'll make you some yummy snacks.
I'll listen to your stories and pretend that they are true,
even if everyone knows you made up at least a few.
I think it's fair to warn you what will happen if you leave me,
I'll shut you in my closet and never let you free!
You probably think I'm joking and this poem is pretty cute,
but I'd really hate to see you end up blind, deaf or mute.
So to make things easier just stay right where you are,
because I love you and I'd miss you if you traveled very far.

Moving Day!
EJ backed the 'ol moving truck right up to the front door.
The cowboys had to play in the empty truck. They stopped running around long enough to pose for this picture with Pop and Grammy.
Doesn't it look like Grammy should be saying, "Ya'all come back now, ya hear!"
We had an awesome moving crew!
My favorite chair was sitting in the perfect location. I could sit on my throne and direct my minions to do my bidding. Hee Hee.
We paid our crew in doughnuts for breakfast and pizza for lunch.
Thank you to everyone for getting us moved in! Also, a big thank you to Aunt Rock Star who watched the cowboys that morning!

More Feathers in my Empty Nest
In July 2008, Pretty Princess graduated from High School and moved from where we were living back to our home state. Pop and I thought we were experiencing an empty nest permanently at that time. I blogged about it then, as I sorted through my youngest's things. At that time, I never dreamed that our we would move back home where our girls' and their families live, and settle into a multi-generation home...full of life, noise, fun, and sometimes chaos. Happy, crazy chaos.
If you've been reading this blog for a while, you already know about our multi-generational family living arrangement for the past nearly two years. This past weekend, it came to an end...not in a dramatic, sad way - but in a happy, watching-to-see-what-God-will-do kind of way. EJ and Farm Chick are being blessed in a big way with the house they have just bought and moved in to. Bubba, Wubba, and Q are going to LOVE their new house and probably will grow up with very distant memories of living with Pop and Grammy. It's good stuff.
Two days ago, I quietly worked away doing things that would help facilitate the farmhands' move to their new home in the "city" while Q was getting a nap in his pack'n'play and everyone else was somewhere else. As I washed down the dining room table and chairs, I was reminded of all the meals we had shared - usually cooked by Farm Chick. I used a thumbnail to scrape off a little bit of brownie and thought about how much fun it has been to be a part of a daily ritual that many have discarded as old-fashioned...we call it dinner. I thought about all the laughs we have shared as we watched the boys antics and the events of each day were reviewed. What a privilege.
God gave us this precious time and my hope is that EJ and Farm Chick and the cowboys will have great memories of our "great adventure" at Four Sisters Farm together. EJ and Farm Chick, you have helped make our dream of a place for our family to gather come true. As I've read over old blog posts and realized all that has been accomplished here, I am reminded that we have much to be grateful for...you have contributed much. We choose to think upon good things, but we have weathered a few storms as we learned to make our living arrangement work. I pray that you will reap blessings and benefits from living at Four Sisters Farm and have wonderful memories that you will share and laugh about long after Pop and I are gone...now about the future...
We're looking forward to many more gatherings - with all the four sisters and their families - all at one time or one at a time - each gathering will be a blessing to us. I thank God for our Four Sisters Farm family and friends and while it will quieter than we're used to, Pop and I will enjoy each and every moment here...living the dream.
As I said the last time our nest became empty, "The house is more quiet than ever before...emptier than ever before...but my heart is more full than ever. Thank You, God!"

Random Moving Notes
1. My beloved Keurig stays UNpacked. I will need my coffee on moving morning. She may possibly ride in the front seat of my car...right next to me...with a seat belt on...
2. My children can definitely feel the stress of moving. They have zero patience for each other. It is my job to make sure my patience level does not under any circumstances fall to zero. That would be a catastrophe.
3. EJ and I are sleeping on a Queen size bed this week. Our King is prepped to move. Now I remember why I love the King. That is all I am going to say about that.
4. Poor Bubba has developed a wicked rash. We are unsure at this point if it is Chicken Pox or just a random virus. He is being super tough through it all. I am assuming it will spread through my boys like a wild fire and then head straight for their cousins.
5. We ordered the Big Table from a local wood worker/carpenter. (more like Artist who makes furniture) He will have it completed later this summer. We are thrilled. Once we get moved in, I need to start finding the dinning room chairs. I can't wait to have that project completed.
6. I finally talked EJ into a new Washing Machine. I have hated my washer for four years. I am certain that it hates me back. I asked Grammy if she wanted to keep it. She said "No Way" and ordered a new Washer/Dryer for the farm. She is a smart lady.
7. Daisy and Huckleberry are moving to town. Turning country dogs into town dogs makes me really nervous. I told EJ they have to have a visit to the vet before I will take them into town. They need an update on their vaccines and a good scrubbing.
8. I am pretty sure the kitty cats are all staying here. They are barn cats. They like the country and they roam around. I don't think my new neighbors would love them roaming around like a bunch of hobos.
9. I got a steal of a deal on my new refrigerator. It was marked half off in the "scratch and dent" section of the store. I could care less that there is a dent in the freezer door. My children will bestow a whole lot more dents on that thing immediately.
10. I have managed to keep the eating out to a minimum by cooking last weekend and placing the food in disposable containers. Now we are just two days away from the move. This will no doubt begin the week long eating out extravaganza. Don't judge me.
That is all for now.
No, it's not. I forgot to say...
The twitch in my eye that took up residence about a week ago shows no sign of leaving. Clearly I have stress issues.

I am going to miss this.
It is starting to feel real.
The boxes are stacking up.
The moments of this season in our lives are flying by all too fast now.
It has been nearly three years of living at the Four Sisters Farm and nearly two years of living here with Pop and Grammy.
My head knows that I am only moving fifteen minutes away.
My head knows that I am the one who initiated this move.
My head knows that we need to have more room to welcome the children who are coming.
My head knows that this is a good thing.
But my heart just doesn't get it.
My heart, that stinkin' heart. It loves so big and it feels way too much.
I am going to miss this.
I will miss cooking for everyone.
I will miss coffee chats with Mom.
I will miss watching my boys scurry to the back door to greet Pop and Grammy.
I will miss stolen moments with my Dad when it was just us even in a house with this many people.
I will miss Buzz Lightyear pancake mornings.
I will miss walking to the pond when I need a little time to myself.
I will miss the front porch.
I will miss being in the middle of all the action.
I will miss lingering after dinner with EJ, Pop and Grammy while we solve the world's problems or maybe just laugh our heads off about something that happened that day.
I have to remind myself that Pop and Grammy will still be here.
The farm will still be here.
I can come out anytime I need to.
I can drop off my boys so they can soak up special time with Pop and Grammy.
I am not losing them.
It is time for the next chapter and I know good things await for all of us.
That doesn't mean there won't be tears. Change is hard but God is good.
Pop, Grammy, and EJ,
I love you each so much. Thank you for this adventure. I am proud to have been a part of it.
Love always,
Farm Chick

The one about the house
I cannot explain how this happened. It just did. The night I knew the twins were gone it came over me so strong. I looked at EJ and said, "It's time. Buy me a house."
You see we have been on the Four Sisters Farm adventure for almost 3 years now. The first year we were here by ourselves and then God blessed us by bringing Pop and Grammy here for the past two years.
The plan was for us to live in a multi-generational home for a couple more years until we were ready to build a place on EJ's family land. With the housing market so low we can buy a heck of a house for much less than what we can build it.
The timing seemed a little crazy to those around me. Everyone wanted to be sure that I wasn't acting out of grief. I asked that everyone would give me grace if I freaked out and changed my mind in a week. EJ contacted our realtor but told her that he wasn't sure if I would be able to go through with it.
But the feeling didn't go away. It got stronger. I felt like we needed to get in position to receive the blessing of more children. (a strange emotion when you have just lost two)
At the time there was literally NOTHING right for us on the market. I kept checking realtor.com to see if just the right place would appear. I figured God was going to make the process take a long time so we could all come to grips with this big change. I was perfectly okay with that.
You see, I have loved being here. This place is special. The land is beautiful. The pond is peaceful. The home is warm. My folks are here. My family comes here often.
Don't get me wrong. Multi-generational living has its challenges. But the benefits have certainly outweighed the challenges and the time together has been so sweet.
Two weeks into our search we found what we thought was just the right house. It was in distressed condition but we were looking forward to restoring it. It was going to be over 5,000 square feet when it was completed. It had so much potential. Long story short...the deal fell apart.
We were so sad but knew that God must have something else for us. Again I checked online for more homes. I was sure this was going to take forever. When were we going to find another home that size for a decent price? What a bummer.
Then I found it.
I had heard that this home would be going on the market but I had no idea how BEAUTIFUL it was.
EJ was out of state on business when the house came on the market. I e-mailed him the link to the house. He encouraged me to go see it. I wasn't sure I wanted to do that without him. I took Grammy and the boys and we checked the place out.
I LOVED IT.
It has a very open floor plan. I can have those big family gatherings I love to host. Not to mention the size of the bedrooms, the wood floors, the vaulted ceiling, the sun room, the huge family room, the fireplaces, the built in book shelves, the storage space, etc.
So I told EJ all about it. He encouraged me to go ahead an make an offer. We knew what we were looking for. This home has over 5,000 square feet and it is move in ready. All I need to do is buy some furniture to fill it.
We literally bought this house while EJ was in another state!
He just went with me to see it this morning and sign the paperwork.
What an exciting time!
This is one of the pictures from the listing. It just makes me happy...

(The sign says, "Christ is the head of this house. He is the unseen guest in every room.")
You want to know something special? Not only is there a heritage of faith in this home, there is also a heritage of adoption. This home has always been owned by an adoptive family.
What does God have planned for us in this next chapter?
I believe He is bringing more children.
This house will be ready to give them shelter and a place to call home. Bring them home, Lord, in your perfect timing. We are here with open arms.

Moving Day
After a 3 day delay, the moving truck arrived! Grammy and Pop are officially moved in! Here are some pics from that day...
Bubba aka Spiderman preferred to stay inside during all the chaos.
Wubba was happy to be with Romeo.
So happy he gave him a big smooch-a-roo!

Hello and Goodbye
"Wanted...Pop and Grammy
Wanted for living too far away for the past 4 years.
Sentence - they will live out their days at Four Sisters Farm looking after 8+ grandchildren. These little ones will make sure to keep them young and therefore their sentence long. WELCOME HOME!"
2 1/2 weeks has flown by and now it is time for Grammy to fly back to SC. I'm pretty sure a deep dark depression is falling over all of us. We are hopeful her stay in SC will go quickly and she can officially move home soon.
Grammy, we promise to take good care of Pop while you are gone. We will miss you!

There's No Place Like Home
Grammy’s Perspective: Historically, when God has moved us we have had to WAIT to see what He is doing through that move…through the pain of telling family and friends “Goodbye” and leaving church families who have loved, helped, and supported us through a variety of trials in our lives.
This has been no exception. Leaving Kansas after putting down roots was – well – it was painful. We had NO doubt that we were supposed to go – the “handwriting was on the wall.” (Daniel 5:5 gives a biblical reference for this old saying.) It was evident to everyone that God had been preparing Pop for the job he had been offered in South Carolina…it was a dream job. The only drawbacks were moving one teenage daughter (Pretty Princess, who only remembered Kansas), leaving behind three married daughters, three sons-in-law, two grandchildren, Pop’s Mom, my parents, and a WHOLE BUNCH of family and friends. Like I said – it was painful… Our married daughters were stoic when I wanted to just fall apart. Of course, Pretty Princess and I held it together for the good of all on that last day as we kissed our family goodbye. I remember sensing that Lou Lou was not fooled by Grammy’s pretending that it was okay to live that far away from people you love.
…and it didn’t become less painful to be so far away as six more “grandblessings” came.
So...here we are near the end of this chapter. Listing our house to sell and making our lists of things to do before we each leave our work in SC has been bittersweet. We will never forget the things God has brought about during our time here. He moved us for our good – to teach us things we needed to know in an environment where we had only each other to lean on. He has accomplished much in our hearts that we may never be able to convey in words. We are grateful.

I don’t have real ruby red slippers to wear as I click my heels together and say, “There’s no place like home…” but I do have the cutest pair of pink and navy muck boots waiting for me in the mud room of the farmhouse…I think they will do.
Pop's Perspective: I can't express how excited I was when I landed the job in South Carolina. It was and is a dream job for someone like me. I have been so blessed to get to do what I love. It is meaningful work with interesting people and just simply fun. I've had the privilege of training committed young federal officers and helping equip them with the skills to survive in a dangerous world. I recognize how blessed I've been to enjoy such fulfilling and rewarding work.
There are only two jobs I would be more interested in than the one I have in South Carolina. Both are in Kansas and one is right where we would choose to be because of the close proximity to Four Sisters Farm and our precious family. The odds of this job coming open were remote and it was even more unlikely I would be able to secure the position. In my business these type of jobs are few and far between but God is good and always ahead of us. We have again experienced the unlikely and we are not foolish enough to call it luck. God is always ahead, always making a way. We are headed back to Kansas and we are filled with gratitude and thanksgiving. It would be more than enough to return to those we love, but God threw in the bonus of a great job. In these hard economic times, it is so much more than we could have imagined.
I am truly excited to start a new career challenge and spend some time on the farm. We have missed too many birthdays, Easter egg hunts, soccer games, recitals, smooches, hugs, crayon pictures, talks with our children and walks with our grandchildren. I look forward to just being in the presence of those I love without counting the days until we have to get on an airplane and leave. We still have much to do and trying to sell a house in this market is scary. But, shame on us if we don't proceed with faith. It looks like that old barn at Four Sisters might get a face lift a little sooner than originally planned. Why not, you know we're going to be living very close to lots of family and friends.....(you can't see, but trust me, I'm smiling).

Why not, you know we're going to be living very close to lots of family and friends.....(you can't see, but trust me, I'm smiling).
